Whitgreave Primary School’s Community Radio Station
As an innovative and modern school, we look to prepare our students for the ‘real world’ that lies ahead in as many ways as possible. The Whitgreave Community Radio Station is one of many ways in which we help to prepare our students with real life experiences.
Not only is the school radio a fun thing for students to get involved in, but it is also an exceptionally professional resource from which to gain real life experience and develop essential skills in a professional environment, using professional equipment that is the current industry standard.
There are also many other benefits to having Whitgreave Primary School’s Community Radio Station, some of these include;
- Inclusion – Our School Radio Station is run by the students and for the students, which helps to build an inclusive atmosphere in the school. Radio is all about communication and running a Radio Show takes commitment and teamwork, in order for it to be a success.
- Self-esteem & Confidence Building – Most people find talking into a microphone in a room far less intimidating than appearing on camera or on stage. It allows students to express their views and build their confidence, whether it is discussing important issues or sharing ideas, our Radio Station gives our students a confident voice within our school.
- Speaking & Listening Skills – Radio is about speaking and listening. Whether you are presenting or just listening to a show, these vital skills are not only fundamental in radio but are essential for ‘real world’ skills.
- Literacy – It may seem strange to talk about writing skills with regards to radio, but for their Radio Shows students will need to write scripts and prepare links. Considering this and accounting for the preparation required for talk shows, radio drama or interviews and it becomes clear that writing plays a big role in radio and can be extended to meet the National Curriculum in a variety of ways.
- Empowerment– The Whitgreave Community Radio Station offers our students the opportunity to discuss the issues that matter to them in a non-confrontational format. Whether it is discussing important issues or sharing the music they love.
- Teamwork – Planning and presenting Radio Shows requires a great deal of teamwork. Like a ‘real’ station we assign roles and responsibilities for presenters, engineers and station management, runners, interviewers, etc.
